Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1

What kind of service is Cocony?

Accepted Answer

Cocony is a service that mixes a loved one’s ashes with natural clay and fires them into a small, stone-like form. Rather than keeping ashes only in an urn or a grave, we aim for a new style of keeping close—something palm-sized that can rest quietly in everyday spaces like the living room or bedroom.

You can also have multiple stones made so family members can share them.

Question 2

How is turning ashes into a “stone” different from typical home memorials?

Accepted Answer

In common home memorials, ashes are often stored in an urn at home, or a small urn/pendant. At Cocony, instead of showing the ashes themselves, we mix them with soil and harden them into a “stone-like” form, so they blend naturally into living spaces and can be placed as part of your interior.

Question 3

What materials do you use?

Accepted Answer

Cocony is made by mixing ashes with ceramic clay mainly from the Tono region of Gifu (around Tajimi) together with natural soils and minerals, then high-firing in a kiln. We use no artificial binders like resins or adhesives. The finish has a simple, gentle texture—much like natural stone.

Question 4

Can Cocony be used for human ashes as well as pet ashes?

Accepted Answer

We’re not handling human ashes at this time.

Question 5

Is it safe if small children or pets touch it?

Accepted Answer

It’s fine to touch, but please be careful in environments where something might be put in the mouth by mistake. Strong biting can chip the stone and fragments may cause injury. Ingesting powder or small fragments is not recommended.

We recommend placing it out of reach of small children and curious pets.

Question 6

How much ash is required?

Accepted Answer

As a general guide, about 100 g of ashes yields around 10 Cocony stones. 100 g is roughly one small dog or a cat. We understand weighing ashes yourself is a burden, so regardless of quantity desired, we ask that you send all ashes in the urn.

We use the amount needed and return any remainder finely powdered in a dedicated container. If you want 10+ pieces or would like to turn all ashes into Cocony, please contact us—we’ll discuss the method individually.

Question 7

Do I need to use all the ashes? Is sending only part okay?

Accepted Answer

You don’t have to send everything; sending a portion is fine. However, if possible we recommend sending all ashes in the urn for these reasons:

If we run short during production, you won’t need to ship additional ashes later. It reduces the psychological burden of deciding how much to set aside.

If you’d prefer to keep some ashes, please contact us. We’ll advise on how much to send based on your desired quantity and finish.

Question 8

How do I send the ashes?

Accepted Answer

After applying, use the dedicated mailing kit we send. The kit includes a container, packing materials, and instructions. Please place the ashes as instructed and return them in the same box.

Question 9

I’m anxious about mailing ashes. How should I pack them?

Accepted Answer

Please send ashes with Yamato’s trackable courier service. Round-trip shipping is on us; there’s no additional cost to you.

For packing, please use our dedicated kit. It includes materials to secure the urn and cushioning to prevent damage or spillage. Sending ashes by courier is not illegal in Japan and is commonly practiced for home memorials and powdering services. If you have concerns, feel free to contact us even before applying.

Question 10

Can you handle ashes stored overseas?

Accepted Answer

We’re sorry, but we’re not able to handle ashes stored overseas at this time.

Question 11

Are there religious or legal issues with handling ashes?

Accepted Answer

In Japan, keeping part of the ashes at home after cremation is generally not a legal issue. Views differ by religion/temple, so consulting your family temple or a trusted religious advisor can provide added assurance.

Question 12

How is Cocony made?

Accepted Answer

Roughly speaking, we follow the steps below:

Check and pre-process ashes/bone fragments (remove impurities/metal, adjust condition)
Process into a fine powder
Blend with natural clay and form
Dry and high-fire
Inspect, finish, and pack

Question 13

Can I choose the size, shape, or quantity?

Accepted Answer

You can choose only the “quantity.” Individual sizes and shapes cannot be specified. While we keep to a small, palm-sized range, the amount and composition of ashes and the firing process create unique expressions and shapes. Just as no two sets of ashes are the same, each stone is delivered with its own character. We use what’s needed and return the remainder finely powdered in a dedicated container.

Question 14

How much can I specify color or texture?

Accepted Answer

We value the natural tones of the clay and firing, so finishes are basically white to very pale beige. We cannot accept specific color requests or fine pattern reproductions.

Question 15

What if the finish differs from the image?

Accepted Answer

We proceed after having you check sample photos in advance, but due to natural materials and pottery characteristics, the finish will not be exactly the same as the photos. Please note that returns are generally not accepted. If you have concerns, feel free to contact us.

Question 16

Where is a good place to keep Cocony?

Accepted Answer

Many place it where it naturally comes into view—living rooms, bedrooms, or studies. You can set it on a small stand or dish, or arrange it with a photo frame—any display that blends with daily life.

Question 17

Is it okay to carry it when going out or traveling?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can carry it. The stone may break if dropped or hit strongly. When going out, keep it in the included pouch or a cushioned case.

Question 18

Is outdoor display or placing it in the garden okay?

Accepted Answer

Taking it outdoors temporarily is fine. Long-term outdoor placement may gradually change tone and texture due to weather and sunlight. If you enjoy such changes, there’s no problem; if not, we recommend indoor display.

Question 19

Can I place it with a household shrine, Buddhist altar, or grave?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cocony has no religious restrictions and can be placed with a household altar, Buddhist altar, grave, or photo frame. As views may differ by sect, please check with your own temple if you’re concerned.

Question 20

Can it be buried or returned to the soil in the future?

Accepted Answer

Cocony is made by firing natural clay with ashes into a stone. It takes a long time to decompose naturally, so it’s not suitable for burials intended to return to the earth quickly. Rules on burial and handling ashes vary by municipality—please check with yours if needed.

Question 21

Can you combine multiple pets’ ashes into a single Cocony?

Accepted Answer

In some cases, yes. It depends on the amount and condition of the ashes. Please contact us via the form first.

Question 22

Can I apply before my pet passes away?

Accepted Answer

Yes, pre-need applications are accepted. We can also discuss preferences like shape, tone, and dividing ashes.

Question 23

Question 33

I’m worried about damage in shipping. How is it packed?

Accepted Answer

To prevent damage, we pack Cocony with double cushioning so it’s firmly protected. The stone is fixed to avoid movement in the box, and we ship only via Yamato Transport with “This Side Up” and “Fragile” labels.

Question 34

Can you ship to me if I live overseas?

Accepted Answer

We’re sorry, but due to legal constraints and risk of shipping issues, we do not ship overseas.

Question 35

What happens if delivery comes when I’m not at home?

Accepted Answer

For safe receipt, we ship with no ‘leave-at-door’ option. If delivered when you’re out, the package won’t be left at your door; Yamato will take it back and leave a missed-delivery notice. Please arrange redelivery yourself by phone or online as indicated.

Question 36

Can I cancel after applying?

Accepted Answer

You can cancel before production begins. If we’ve already sent you the mailing kit, a fee of 1,100 JPY will be charged.

Any extra fees from convenience-store payment, etc. are borne by the customer. For convenience store payments/Pay-easy, we refund to your bank account after deducting transfer fees.

For credit card payments, the card company charges a refund fee. Please bear a 5% refund processing fee. You will receive the amount after deducting the fee from the card company.

If you cancel after production has started, we’re sorry but we cannot issue a refund; delivery proceeds as usual.

Question 37

If I cancel during production, can the ashes be returned?

Accepted Answer

We can return the ashes. However, depending on progress, shaping may already have begun and the condition upon return may differ. We’ll guide you case by case on the specific return format.

Question 38

What if it arrives damaged?

Accepted Answer

If there is an initial defect such as damage during shipping, please contact us. We will promptly remake it, or produce one additional piece, with shipping and fees on us. Please contact us within 14 days after arrival.

Question 39

If it chips or cracks over time, is there a warranty or remake?

Accepted Answer

We do not offer guarantees or remakes for age-related wear. Cocony does not promise uniform shapes or colors, and we value the natural cycle of life. We would be grateful if small chips over time could be accepted as natural change—just like a real stone.

Question 40

What happens if ashes are lost in transit?

Accepted Answer

If you shipped ashes to us but didn’t receive an arrival email, please contact the courier yourself first. If needed, we can also help.

If a shipment we sent to you hasn’t arrived, please contact us. We will investigate with the courier and get back to you.

Question 41

Does this conflict with certain religious doctrines?

Accepted Answer

There are no legal issues, but views may differ by religion/sect. If you’re concerned, please check with your own sect to be sure.

Accepted Answer

For pet ashes, there’s no legal problem with processing them or sending them by courier.

You can use Cocony with confidence.
